I used the google blog search engine and came upon this blog about reluctant readers. I selected it because it was posted by a mother homeschooling her two kids, one of whom is a reluctant reader. She talks about methods she used to encourage her son to read:
We found that if we checkout a recorded book for him to listen to FIRST, he was eager to actually READ it after he heard it on tape or CD. Often he would listen to the book on tape while doing LEGOS then was willing to read it. That still works, but now that he is in Jr. High, what also works is him hearing or seeing what peers are reading (friends, his sister, kids from youth group) then he wants to read it! Another, "tip" I have used with our reluctant reader, is to just casually leave out a few books of his current interest around the house where I am sure he'll find them. 98% of the time, he picks them up, reads them, and says, " Mom, I was just reading this book... did you know...." It is effortless, battle free.
