Social Networking -- MySpace.com

Here is a link to the Schaumburg Township District Library's Teen Department MySpace account. I chose it because it displays the events for the Summer Reading Program 2k7. The events are great ideas for motivating reluctant teen readers to participate in library events and thereby become interested in reading.

Specific Facet First

My topic of interest is school library support for reluctant readers. Therefore, for the specific facet first approach, I searched each facet seperately on LibraryLit.

Here are my results:
f1 reluctant readers = 194 hits
f2 school library = 22,076 hits
f3 programs and support = 636 hits

As it turns out, "reluctant readers" is my specific facet.

Citation Pearl Growing

I performed the known item type of citation pearl growing on ERIC. The article I started with is "The Oprah Revolution: Book Clubs in Library Media Centers" by Carol Littlejohn. The following were descriptors:
Student Interests, Reading Interests, Reading Skills, Media Specialists, Clubs, School Libraries, Reading Motivation, Librarians, Middle School Students, Adolescent Literature, Middle Schools

I clicked on "reading motivation" and came up with 699 hits. Then I added the subject "school libraries" and came up with 95 hits.

Thesaurus Terms

I used the online ERIC thesaurus and typed the word "reading" in my search. Several categories came up so I chose "Reading Attitudes" since I feel it is best associated to my topic of reluctant readers. These are the related terms:

Broader Terms:
Attitudes;
Narrower Terms:
n/a
Related Terms:
Educational Attitudes; Reading; Reading Ability; Reading Achievement; Reading Aloud to Others; Reading Habits; Reading Interests; Reading Motivation;

Here is what I noticed about the difference between tag and thesaurus terms:
1. Tag terms use more informal labels since they are created by the users themselves.
2. Thesaurus terms are formal labels created by professionals.
3. Thesaurus terms are more specific, which can be more helpful in finding the information you seek.
4. Tag terms are usually less specific and sometimes have abbreviations or acronyms that are not always understood by other users.

BLOG: Methods to Encourage Reluctant Readers

I used the google blog search engine and came upon this blog about reluctant readers. I selected it because it was posted by a mother homeschooling her two kids, one of whom is a reluctant reader. She talks about methods she used to encourage her son to read:

We found that if we checkout a recorded book for him to listen to FIRST, he was eager to actually READ it after he heard it on tape or CD. Often he would listen to the book on tape while doing LEGOS then was willing to read it. That still works, but now that he is in Jr. High, what also works is him hearing or seeing what peers are reading (friends, his sister, kids from youth group) then he wants to read it! Another, "tip" I have used with our reluctant reader, is to just casually leave out a few books of his current interest around the house where I am sure he'll find them. 98% of the time, he picks them up, reads them, and says, " Mom, I was just reading this book... did you know...." It is effortless, battle free.

I found this blog at Windows Live Spaces - http://mayaguezana.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!40A93EE5C6C909E9!1094.entry

ISAR

The library type I chose is school libraries and my area of interest is reluctant readers. I chose this area because as a teacher, I am interested in finding ways to help students that are reluctant to read.
